Marquis Entry Sign:

The Westside Pavillion in Los Angeles was another major Sussman-Presja Architechts project like the Horton Plaza.
At Coast Sign Display in Santa Ana, under the leadership of Ron Torkelson and Stuart Allison, I helped with patterns, metal - plexiglass fabrication and custom spray coatings applied outdoors.
One major challenge was sheer scale: the marquis sign shown above was 72 feet wide; but beyond that, I had to match a matte texture while using a catalyzed polyurethane designed to give a very high gloss- they said it couldn't be done. . .
The "W" and "WESTSIDE" letters were fabricated by the Rasnick brothers including grid-drilling the faces for fiber-optic jewels, then we gold leafed the letters and glued in the fiber-optics, carefully filling the insides with cast foam to tie it all together and anchor the bundled optical cabling.
The "PAVILLION" letters are 3/4" cast acrylic, bandsaw cut, sandblasted edges, gold leafed faces, pushed through the sign face and back lit.
The directories and parking directional systems were equally complex to realize. But we did. On Time.
